A Cautionary Tale

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Brodo and I am the newest member of the family.  All you readers at CTF probably know my cousin Nora pretty well.  I want to tell you a sad tale of how I came to be in this awkward position:

It was a wonderful sunny morning.  My big Uncle Louie and I were making our rounds, securing the perimeter of the property like we do every morning when Louie smelled it first.  Glorious smell!  Rotting corpse with just a tint of horse poop.  We looked at each other with greedy eyes and set out on the trail.  Since I am a renowned hunter (I've caught one gopher, countless lizards, and have come very, very close to a bird) I led the charge.  The scent led us off the property- but we were so enthralled with the lovely possibility of finding the source that we hardly noticed or cared.  As we crossed to the neighbors land, Uncle Beuford issued a cautionary bark- warning us not to disobey our masters by leaving the property.  Louie barely glanced back and I knew Beuford only wanted our delicious prize for himself so we paid him no heed.  The scent grew stronger and stronger as we approached the neighbors horse pen.  Louie was nearly distracted by the fresh dung but I urged him to continue- to keep his cataract eyes on the prize!

We moved on, the scent overpowering us, driving us into a hunting, drooling frenzy!  Finally, in the tall weeds, we found our source.  Glorious Smell!  We rolled, we feasted, we were in ecstasy!  Louie got his fill and slowly made his way home but I was just beginning.  With shorter fur, I could encase myself in the Glorious Scent more thoroughly anyway.  Soon I was no longer just partaking of the scent- I WAS the Glorious Scent!

My master's voice distracted me for a moment.  Apparently they had discovered my absence.  Irritated that they would dare to interrupt me in such a moment of bliss, I carried on, rolling, feasting, allowing the scent to envelope me.  There was little left of the actual source and I could barely taste it now so I finally consented to returning home to see what all the fuss was about from the masters.

As I approached the property, I found Louie with his head hanging low.  One of my master's had a look of contempt on his face while the other merely looked ill.  I decided to place my stakes with the ill-looking one but as I drew closer and my Glorious Scent reached her nose, she wretched and pushed me toward the contemptuous one.  I sensed my end was near!

Louie and I were lashed to the porch and we awaited our punishment.  Louie was subjected to it first- the  horrible hose!

His head remained low and I knew my only chance at escape was to employ my most pitiful look.  With dropping eyes and quivering legs, I mournfully whimpered for mercy but my master ignored me and continued to spray Louie.

Louie was left to drip and my contemptuous master turned the dreaded hose to me!

I quivered and cried but to no avail... we were hosed, shampooed, hosed again, and even had mouthwash sprayed down our throats.  No longer could I smell or taste the Glorious Scent.  My only senses were cold and wet.

Louie advised me to look remorseful or the torture would never end.

I quickly hung my head in shame.

This seemed to do the trick.  The hose was finally turned off and we were left to drip on the porch.

Meanwhile, Beuford and Nora soberly watched from inside, obviously enjoying countless treats and being called 'good.'

Louie and I had learned our lesson... we would forever be obedient to the masters and stay on our property.... but... what's that I smell?  There still remains a remnant of that Glorious Scent!  Tomorrow we must return to the source when the masters are not paying attention and search for the remaining filth!  Victory will be ours again!!

Irony

Mother's Day... we invited Mr. Incredible's family over to celebrate for dinner Sunday night... so I ran around all day, cooking, cleaning, putting things away.  And trying to make all the obligatory 'Happy Mother's Day!' phone calls to grandmothers etc.  While on one said phone calls, I was hurridly (new word alert!!) stuffying things away in my Creation Station (my sewing room- but I'm trying to think of something else to call it...).  One handed, I reached up to put things away on this shelf:

Do you see the danger?  Let me show you:

What is that you might ask?  Let me tell you.  Its the bottom nine inches or so from our 2009 Christmas Tree.  Why is it perched precariously on a top shelf in my project room?  I have some great intention to make it into a cherished family heirloom someday.  Don't worry, I'll probably blog about it if it ever happens.

So what happened when I distractedly reached up to the top shelf?  Let me show you:

Oh let me illustrate again:

Let me answer the obvious questions:

1. yes, it hurt.

2. yes, I saw little spots- but no birds...

3. no, I managed to stay on the phone, delivering my mother's day wishes.

4. no, I did not shout any expletives or other curses (I was talking to my grandmother for crying out loud!)

5. and yes, I had to entertain dinner guests with a gigazmo (new word alert! 2 in one post!)  red mark on my forehead.

6. oh and its still there... and its getting darker.

Cool- huh?

Hope you all had an injury-free weekend!

(oh- did anyone get the irony?)

Happenings

Hello BlogLand!

It has been awhile since I've checked in... so here's a photographic recap of the last few weeks:

I had a birthday!  JT made my cake- like he does most years- and this year it wasn't a cake-wreck... just a little crooked!

And I got a canoe for my birthday!  It looks cool on my car...

Mr. Incredible wasn't too thrilled about my boat requisition though...

Did you know canoes are really tippy?  I didn't remember that back when I was a kid... Marinela found out the hard way....

We went to our first Padres game of the season!  Great seats, and we won!

Between trying out the canoe, going to baseball games, and other things, I sat in traffic a lot...

Can you picture the person driving this car?  (Can you picture the person blogging about it?  Nevermind...)

I hiked through the rural wonderland of.... Los Angeles!  (really!)

And played in an alumni Pops concert at my university!

Yeah... there really were 19 trumpets... but we sounded AWESOME! (for people who haven't played in 10 years...)

So that's the latest... now everyone is caught up and we can resume regular blog posting... hopefully!

Mama Mia! Cooking in Romania!

One of the classes the H2H missionaries teach at the orphanage is cooking.  There are 4-5 kids in this class and they meet once a month.  So far, they have learned how to make many traditional Romanian cookies and sweets.  They even provided the goodies for a special 'mother's day' celebration and received rave reviews of their food!

During the week after Easter, we had the cooking girls (there's usually one boy but he was out that day) come to the H2H Girls Transition House for a lesson in Italian cooking.  Disclaimer: No Italians were harmed in the making of this excursion.  There also were not any real Italians present during this class.  But we did what we could with what we had ;)

So first, we had a taste test of common ingredients used in Italian cooking.

Dried oregano anyone?

How about onion and garlic?  They actually really like the garlic... weird Romanians [insert your favorite Dracula joke here]

Then we got down to cooking.  We made a Tomato and Mozzarella Salad (new cheese for Romanian orphans!!)

And also a basic tomato sauce and spaghetti.

And Italian cookies of for dessert.  My favorite moment was watching the girls read the recipe and then assign tasks to each other.  Example: "We need 3 cups of flour.  You three each get to add one cup and I get to stir."  Or, "We need 5 tablespoons of baking powder.  You each get to add one spoon and I will add two!"

After a concentrated effort by all, we sat down to enjoy our meal!  The sauce was a bit too peppery but the girls still enthusiastically consumed- they did all the hard work anyway and I think we excited to try a meal that they prepared from the beginning.

more music and ART!

Yep, that's what we did today... more music and ART!  Music was beginning stuff with the Monkey class (that would be the little kids that can't sit still for anything).  I led rhythm/clapping games with the kiddos... which went well.  Then Kirsteen taught on The Carnival of the Animals.  The kids seemed to enjoy it... they learned about elephants, kangaroos, and birds... so they walked like each animal, picked which instruments should represent each animal, listened to the music, then made thumb print animals...

Here's Matilda working on her animals:

And some of their artwork:

The 'Monkeys' were mainly out of control... as per usual.  This is my favorite 'Bad Kid-' the one who can't stop moving or touching the instruments:

He was pretty devious today- getting a stern talking to by several of our staff.  But I still have to smile even though I saw him getting yelled at over and over again.  While doing an exercise in a small group, I wrapped my arms around him and helped him play a few notes on a keyboard.  He sat attentively while I kept my hand on him and was eager to play the notes correctly.  He even stopped playing while I held him and listened to the other kids perform... so he's not a bad kid all the time!

In the afternoon we hosted the 'Art and Design' class.  My plan was to introduce a bunch of different types of art and techniques.  So we had watercolors, a yarn project, block printing, and MONSTERS!!!  The kids had a blast and so did I... here's more photos:

Loving the monsters... I think they're all worthy of ChristmasTreeFace Creations!  Perhaps an international section of my etsy shop?  We'll see!

Easter in Romania!

I made it to Romania!  We arrived on Thursday and have been kept pretty busy with the happenings of H2H, teams, and life in Romania.  Life in Romania includes Easter this time.  As this is a major holiday here (stores close, people have work off for the next week, etc, etc) we had major plans.

Our first Easter activity was to visit the orphanage on Saturday.  There were only a handful of kids- those who didn't have extended family or godparents to take them for the holiday... So we brought the party to them!

We had Easter crafts, Jen used Resurrection Eggs to quiz the kids on the true meaning of Easter, and then played games and gave out candy.  Check out our egg relay and 'bunny hop!'

Then on Easter Sunday, after church we invited our Transition House graduates over for a party.   Again, lots of food and fun conversation... and then the first annual H2H Easter Egg hunt!  As this is NOT a tradition in Romania, the kids were very enthusiastic to participate (even though they're all in the 20s!).  In addition to finding eggs and candy, they had tasks to complete for points.  For each point, they could redeem special prizes from our 'store' (deodorant and other toiletries, candy, school supplies, new sheets and towels, soccer balls, etc).  Our biggest 'sellers' were deodorant and sheets!

Today we started our 'field trips' with some of the kids from the orphanage.  We brought a handful of kids that are involved in H2H Music Classes for a morning lesson on Program Music.  The kids watched 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice,' listened to 'Dance Macabre,' and then had the chance to perform their own version of 'Dance' with piles of untuned percussion and recorders!

After music lessons we had a few minutes to hang out with the kids in the backyard.  They loved exploring our house and getting one on one attention from our team and staff.  It was a good reminder of how much a little thing- like sitting next to a kid while they are coloring or goofing off in front of the camera- can make a huge impact on someone's life.  When it was time to go, they all pleaded to stay- or for us to come with them.  While we will see many of them again soon (tomorrow even!) it still is heart breaking to walk arm in arm with a kid to the gate and wave as they drive away.

On another note, let's see if I can get ONE normal' photo of myself while on this trip.... my bet is probably not ;)
