Sunday Curations

Some things recently enjoyed:

1.

a petite chocolate cake enjoyed after dinner for no particular occasion.

2. Our Valentine's Soirée.

Our tradition of a fancy dinner at home was expanded to include a few friends and kiddos of course.  On the menu: Orange baked brie, caesar salad wedge, oven-roasted beef tenderloin, green beans amandine, herbed- buttered ciabata, and a variety of sweet desserts.  And delicious wine.  But I'm not a wine person so I can't tell you more than that.  Kid's Menu: milk en sippy cup, heart-shaped mini cheese pizzas, and a few green beans too.

We moved dinner outside this year since we've been experiencing 80 degree days and mild nights.

3. Leo update.  He's eating!  Everything he can fit in his mouth, which makes his life hazardous right now but also exciting.

So far he loves avocado, black beans, banana, apples, sweet potato, cheerios, any type of citrus (he's not supposed to eat that yet though).  He doesn't like green beans.

And he does this now:

4.  This family of five (!) lives in less than 700 sq ft.  And its beautiful.  There's something soooo appealing about the simplicity and lack of clutter of their lifestyle.

5. Here's the tenderloin recipe we made for V-day.  Heaven on a fork.

6. More serious- this is what I've been thinking about during the Olympics.  There's been lots of things to criticize Russia for- lack of yogurt, treatment of stray dogs, conditions of the bathrooms.  But this, this really matters.

7. I live with a pair of clones.  One is a little smaller than the other but they act, speak, think the same... and its all very different than the way I do/speak/think.  But I love them anyway.  And life is good (but I hope Leo is a little bit like me- just for fairness sake!).

Sunday Curations

This is my attempt to blog a little more frequently.  We'll see if I stick to Sundays, but for now we're going with it.

This week was a doozy.  Nothing major, but lots of little things that kind of wiped me out.  My favorite two year old figured out all the things that drive me crazy and then proceeded to do them in increasing amounts throughout the week.  He also skipped naps several days in a row and that made life even more 'fun.'  Leo decided to act like he was teething (but no teeth yet) and had a miserable night that coincided with Mr. Incredible being unexpectedly out of town one night for work.  And then we all woke up (Leo at 3am, Corbin at 6am, and Mr. Incredible much later) with colds that derailed our Sunday.  So in light of all this 'fun,' I've decided a little look back at the nicer moments of the week and other things I find interesting might go a long way in making this coming week a little better than last.

1. Corbin-o has an imaginary enemy.  His name is Buster and he's a monster that does bad things to Corbin… like knocking his toys off the table or tripping Corbin when he's running down the hallway.  At first I thought Corbin was talking about a real person that was picking on him at church but we don't know any Busters and we overheard Corbin yelling at him while playing by himself in his room.  Its amusing… and creepy.  Like exorcism creepy.  But all kids do this- right?

2. I'm not sure if this is part of the teething stage or just the 'I'm a baby and put everything in my mouth' stage but Leo has become obsessed with my phone and as a result has gotten quite good at taking selfies.  Sometimes I make it in the background too.  Here's one of his latests:

3. We've enjoyed walks and bike rides to the park nearly everyday this week.  Corbin is getting better at his balance bike (like we actually make it to the park and home without me carrying the thing) and its been a good little outing to burn off some energy.  Watching him scale the play structures or fly down the slides reminds me of those commercials playing right now during the Olympics where they show an athlete and then rewind through their life as they are training as kids, learning to skate or ski, all the way to taking first steps.  Am I witnessing first steps towards an Olympic medal someday?  Probably not since he seems to have inherited my grace and coordination but its fun to think about.

4. I've started going through my craft room and organizing/purging.  Since before Christmas its been a disaster area- wrapping presents, making gifts, stashing random stuff that doesn't have a home.  But seeing an entire box devoted to sketch books or a collection of neatly labeled 'sticky stuff' does make me smile.

5. Arlo Guthrie- anyone know who that is?  "You can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant…" does that help?  Mr. Incredible grew up on Arlo Guthrie… his parent's were big fans.  I overheard Corbin and Mr. Incredible getting ready for bed singing Alice's Restaurant.  Interesting legacy to pass along I guess.  Now we're on to the pickle song… go ahead and look it up on youtube… you'll be amazed that someone could base their career off of a song about a pickle.

6. Speaking of Mr. Incredible's parents- they're on an amazing adventure in an old van called the General through South America.  They've been to some amazing places- beautiful cathedrals, butterfly reserves, ruins haunted by howler monkeys.  We're following their adventures here.

7. These might be the coolest thing ever.  Corbin was a fan anyway.  I'm not a milk drinker so I'm trying to think what else you could use these with… any suggestions?

8.  I needed to read this post this week.

9. I think I needed one of these this week too!

10. I love reading this blogger and the little glimpses she shares into her life.  I love her heart here.

I'll leave you with a picture of Corbin, fending for himself while Mr. Incredible suffered through a morning of colds.  Pop tarts are a kid's best friend!  Have a great week!

Looking Back- 2013

2013 has come and gone.  Here are 13 highlights from 2013.

1. We started off the year with a look back at 2012.  Check it out here if you want to relive our journey from babyhood to toddlerdom and experience all the gore yourself!  We also recapped Christmas and introduced Ralph the Reindeer.

2. I threw a No-Stress Toddler Valentine's Day Party for Corbin-o's playgroup.  Cute kids in red and pink if you follow this link!

3. At the end of February I announced that I was pregnant!  I also posted the only belly bump photo (at 18 weeks) that I took the entire pregnancy!  How's that for different!

Oh, and we ruled out the name 'Norman' for the baby.

4. In March we went on a family vacation to Hawaii!  It was Corbin-o's first airplane ride and our first extended family vacation with my side of the family and it was so much fun.

5. We had many firsts in the Spring- a first Easter egg hunt, first train ride, and my first time exclaiming, "Never again…" as a parent.  Of course my dramatic declaration was met with the realization that, yes, I would be doing it all again.

6. Corbin-o continued to grow up.  I shared our visit with 'cousins,' the Bean's growing vocabulary list (which seems like nothing compared to his elaborate stories now!), and many fun adventures, including a trip to the strawberry fields.

7. Corbin turned TWO!  We celebrated with a yellow birthday and it was so much fun to make all the little details- garlands, yellow food, decorations on the playhouse.  His friends all obliged and wore yellow in honor of the birthday boy too.

8. Shortly after Corbin's birthday, we celebrated another birth day- Leo Axel joined our family.  I did something I never thought I would do and shared his birth story with the whole wide internet.  If you're into those kinds of things and would like to hear about our natural birth (complete with the usual misadventures that seem to follow us wherever we go!) check it out.

9. I then proceeded to pepper the blog with Leo updates and squishy newborn photos.  Who doesn't love pics of new babies? (see some here, here, here)

10. I continued to do photo shoots with Christmas Tree Face Photography.  Just for fun we did a fall photo shoot with Corbin and his bff Karson.

11. A Random Things post in October.  I shared about my noisy life, Corbin's recent milestones including a fun game of "Where's Corbin? (hint: not in his bed!)",  and gave a Little Leo Update.

12. Some Recent Conversations with my two year old.  Lots of funny stuff here and a few life-lessons too.

13. Finally, some Christmas Musings and photo update via instagram (follow me @christmastreeface!). I shared some of the craziness of our house during the holidays, a few new traditions, and how Corbin melted my heart with his generosity.

What a blur!  I can't believe some of these things happened a whole year ago… and yet I look back and see my little guy turning into a big guy and a whole new little guy doing his own thing.  Crazy.  Thank you again for following along on all of our adventures.  Again, just for fun here's some of the more interesting blog stats!

its the most wonderful time of the year...

Its Christmas Eve... which feels like Christmas to me and my family.  We always celebrated 'Christmas' on Christmas Eve.  We'd have extended family come over for 'supper'- and have a traditional Swedish smorgasbord of meatballs, ham, rice pudding, jello salad (?), rolls... nothing green you'll notice.  After supper, we'd head to the living room to open presents... with our plates of cookies and mugs of coffee.  Christmas music would play in the background, there was usually a jigsaw puzzle spread out on the coffee table, and my grandpa would spend most of the night telling stories from his travels around the world or boyhood growing up in the south (unfortunately I can't recall many of these stories- his southern accent was so thick and as he got older, he became harder and harder to understand... plus he rarely finished a story without interrupting himself with his high pitched, wheezing laughter- I might not remember his words, but I'll never forget his laughter!).

Mr. Incredible was shocked to learn that I didn't grow up with presents on Christmas morning.  We sometimes had stockings to open but Christmas day was usually spent doing something as a family- movie, the beach- or traveling.  I can't tell you how many times someone in my family was flying somewhere on Christmas day.

Mr. Incredible's family did open presents on Christmas morning.  He remembers his brother waking everyone one up early in the morning to see what Santa brought them.  They'd share a cinnamon roll breakfast, open presents, and watch a new movie before getting dressed and heading to his grandparent's house for the evening.

Now with my own little family, we do the best of both worlds.  We head to my family's Christmas Eve celebration for a Swedish Christmas and then Christmas morning, open presents with the boys.  Austin's family comes over late morning for cinnamon rolls.

With Corbin being a little older, our Christmas celebrations have been amped up a level.  We've enjoyed so many fun activities and traditions this season and I've loved seeing Christmas through his eyes.

He's become particularly fond of Christmas lights.

We decorated a gingerbread house together (and he doesn't realize that he could eat it!).

The stockings are just another decoration right now- he'll soon learn that there's things inside them though!

Nora getting into the action:

We trimmed our ginormous tree...

And then it fell over...

Leo was pretty much a casual observer in all of this...

Corbin helped shop for orphans in Mexico and pack presents.

We actually had cold, 'Christmas-y' weather and busted out the coats and hats:

 Discovered new favorite books:

This boy... I've never known it was possible to have someone in your life who can completely drive you nuts to where you're doing everything in your power to not punch a wall or cry or scream and then in the next minute that same person says exactly the right thing to make you wipe tears away and completely melt inside.  I've mentioned before that he talks...a lot.  All the time.  We were circling the Target parking lot looking for a spot and I was on the verge of, let's say 'losing the Christmas spirit.'  People were driving badly, I had a long shopping list and a small budget that I was stressing over, and Corbin was whining about something directly behind the driver's seat.  I was going bonkers when I spotted brake lights in a spot just in front of me.  I hit the brakes, turned on my turn signal and said a silent alleluia that we would soon be out of the parking lot of terror (and into the the horror known as Target at Christmastime).

As I was waiting, another car across the aisle started backing out so a car sat opposite of me stopped to wait for that parking spot. (confused yet?) As the two cars were backing out, another car decides they can't wait a second longer and pulled around me to drive into the middle of all this backing up parking mess.  Of course, this caused everyone to slam on brakes, narrowly miss colliding with each other, and in the midst of it all, some lady loses control of her shopping cart and it slams directly into my car.  She's apologizing profusely and asking if there's damage and I'm still waiting in the middle of the aisle for a spot to open up.  My spot finally is open and I'm about to pull in when an elderly lady careens down the opposite side of the aisle and crookedly parks in my spot.  I even gave her a little honk, hoping she'd look up and see all the cars waiting, but no luck.  Suddenly there are at least 10 pairs of eyes glued on me to see what I would do... including one little set who witnessed the whole thing from his car seat behind me.

Somehow I managed a few deep breathes and realized that nothing would be gained from yelling at an old lady so I shrugged my shoulders and gave a 'whatever' look to those staring at me and resumed my hunt for a parking spot.  A little while later we found a spot and were thrust into the chaos of shopping.

This story is not about how I'm a great person that can control my anger in parking lots... I wish that could be said more often.  We finished our shopping, loaded up the car, and started navigating out of the parking lot- which had only gotten worse during our time in the store.  As we were finally getting to the driveway, I noticed a woman standing on the grassy median, struggling with an armful of infant and a cardboard sign.  I realized she was trying to breastfeed standing up, juggle the sign, and watch a young 3-4 year old little girl who was playing in the grass.

Her sign read 'Just lost mi job.'

I thought about my own breastfeeding baby and the little, talkative boy sitting behind me munching on some snack I bought waiting in the check out line.  Before I could think about anything else, I flipped a u-turn and circled back to where she was standing.  In that crazy, overfilled parking lot, a single parking spot sat open right next to the lady with the sign.  I pulled in, wiped my eyes, and pulled out whatever was in my wallet- wishing there was more but realizing that I needed to do something.  I handed her the wad of bills, she thanked me, and I jumped back in my car- and two little eyes watched me curiously out the window.

C: Mama, what that lady doing?
A: She's asking for help because she doesn't have a job.
C: What you give her?
A: I gave her some money so she can get food and maybe Christmas presents for her kids.
C: Why?
A: Some people don't have things that we do- like food, and um... trucks.
C: Mama, I can give her trucks.
A: Oh?
C: Yes.  I give her some of my trucks.

Oh Corbin... may you always desire to give more than you receive.
